Hilldale Gardens Retirement
Living Join CAW Local 229
Workers at the Hilldale
Garden Retirement Living voted overwhelmingly to join the Canadian Auto
Workers Union Local 229. Approximately 25 workers are currently employed
at the centre in positions as service attendants, dietary attendants,
and maintenance attendants.
Hildale Gardens is a
retirement home where independent living is provided with numerous
services available. The design of the facility is based on an aging in
place model to recognize the diversity and progression in seniors’
needs. Hilldale Gardens is a privately owned corporation which includes
several investors, including the Hilldale Luthern Church.”
Jody Powers, Local 229
Community Based Organizer, stated “our union is an excellent choice for
these members due to our proven track record bargaining progressive
agreements in the health care sector that often surpass other negotiated
gains. With our reputation of fighting to protect workers rights, we
were an obvious fit for their workplace.”
Barb Maki, CAW Local
229 President reports that “retirement home workers require
representation from a union that understands the specific needs of
members in the health care field. Often there are challenges in the
workplace and during negotiations that necessitate a concrete
understanding of this industry.”
