Options Northwest Ratify Agreement
MAY 5, 2009

Thunder Bay, May 5, 2009/ CAW Local 229 members employed at Options Northwest have voted overwhelmingly in favour to accept a two year collective agreement. Employees who provide personal and residential support for individuals with a developmental disability accepted the settlement by a margin of 98% which was endorsed by their bargaining committee. The members will see an increase to their base wage in the first year of the agreement and a 2% increase for the second year. The members will also enjoy improvements to their benefits, bereavement language and vacation allotments.

Kathy Atkins Unit Chairperson for Options reports that “developmental disabilities are a diverse group of severe chronic conditions that are due to mental and/or physical impairments. People with developmental disabilities have difficulties with major life activities such as language, mobility, learning, self-help, and independent living. We as workers are providing opportunities and support for people with disabilities to enhance quality of life, helping them achieve their maximum potential within a community setting.”

CAW Local 229 Financial Secretary Jason Cummings stated “Persons receive supports designed to meet their individual and collective needs. The majority of supportive housing is provided in community group residences on a 24-hour basis. Persons receiving support may have significant medical or behavioural support requirements.”

CAW Local 229 represents 2,600 members in Northwestern Ontario in over 30 bargaining units which include hospitals, nursing homes, EMS services, and community clinics.
